“Saturday Night Live” is returning to U.S. television with a new, remotely produced show this weekend, broadcaster NBC announced Thursday.

The network said the satirical show, which shut down production in mid-March because of the coronavirus outbreak, would feature original content from “Saturday Night Live” cast members, including the regular “Weekend Update” segment.
“Saturday Night Live,” with its mix of topical sketches, songs and celebrity appearances, has been a cultural favorite in the U.S. since 1975.

“SNL” suffered a blow earlier this week when Hal Willner, a music producer and longtime music supervisor, passed away Tuesday at age 64. Speaking to the press, Willner’s representative Blake Zidell said Willner had symptoms consistent with those caused by coronavirus, but he had not been diagnosed with the virus.

Willner had selected music for “SNL” skits since 1980. He produced albums for Lucinda Williams, Lou Reed and Marianne Faithfull, who is currently being treated for the coronavirus in a London hospital.

NBC gave no details about who would appear on the show which will be broadcast on April 11 at its regular 0330 GMT Sunday time slot.

Since production on U.S. television shows and movies were shut in mid-March, several topical television shows, including “The Ellen Show” and late night staples “The Tonight Show” and “The Late Show,” have returned, with their hosts filming themselves from their homes and speaking with guests on social media and video platforms.
